Hydrocephalus is a horrible condition in Syrian Hamsters that is basically water on the brain, another name for these hamsters are Brachycephalic Hamsters, this is because along with water on the brain a condition that causes a shortening of the snout happens which is called Brachycephaly. This is, however 2 completely different conditions and a brachycephalic hamster doesn't necessarily have Hydrocephalus.
Why is it so bad?
It does look very cute! But the downside to this condition is brittle teeth, some Hydro hams have no teeth at all, respiratory problems, increased risk of respiratory infections, those with bigger and more bulging eyes may also have increased risk of eye problems or scratches on the eyes and also neurological issues.
Some Hydro Hams, depending on Severity of breathing issues need to be housed on Fleece rather than Paper Bedding.
So far only Hamsters from Pet Stores are affected however there are a few people who are breeding them on purpose.
What does a hydro ham look like?
Thanks to an extremely nice facebook group all about Hydro hamsters (https://www.facebook.com/groups/589609781196722/), I have a fair few pictures to share! All are credited to their owners and used with permission.
